The Anatole Family
Amara Anatole’s family told her she would regret choosing to
spend her life alone. So far she has done nothing but prove them wrong. She
doesn’t need romance; she doesn’t need kids; all she needs is her work as a
programmer, the TV shows and games of her childhood that she never quite
outgrew, and a few good friends to share the journey with. But sometimes, as
she gets further into middle age, she looks at the people around her, who have
families of their own and have long ago moved beyond the entry-level jobs she
prefers, and she wonders whether she’s just swimming in circles.

The Kirsch Family
Maxwell and Samuel Kirsch have a comfortable marriage.
Maxwell does the minimum to get by at work while dabbling in all sorts of
different hobbies at home, while the good-natured Samuel is happy to let
Maxwell provide for him. Their three daughters are now in high school. Felicitas
(Liss) knows she has great things ahead of her, and intends to use her mental
talents to bring herself to the great heights she deserves. Caritas (Cari)
prefers simple pleasures, like a good workout and the satisfaction of
tormenting her sisters. And Iustitia (Izzy), the youngest, is an idealist with
an attitude and some naïve ideas about how the world works.

The Brennan Family
Dawn and Liam got married as teenagers, after Dawn got
pregnant while they were still in high school. Against everyone’s expectations,
they’ve made it work, and have been married for many years. It’s the rest of
their family that’s the problem. Dawn has always wanted a big family, but she
was never able to get pregnant again after her daughter Autumn was born. Now
that Autumn is all grown up, Dawn is starting to give up hope that she’ll ever
get the family she’s wanted for so long. Liam just wants Autumn to succeed and
stop wasting her potential, but Autumn can’t imagine tying herself down to a
single career unless it involves her artistic aspirations. And now Liam’s
sketchy older brother Silas, whose favorite thing to do seems to be lying
around on the couch while complaining about what everyone else is doing, has
moved in with them after losing his job.
